Many prominent American fashion designers, including Ralph Lauren, Michael Kors, Kenneth Cole, Calvin Klein, Donna Karan and Narciso Rodriguez call Manhattan home, while the city’s name is also featured in Karan’s DKNY apparel and accessory bridge line.

The city’s landscapes have served as a backdrop for numerous films and television programs, while its boroughs, streets and multi-ethnic neighborhoods are the namesakes for prestigious designer fragrance-maker Bond No. 9 assortment of fine scents.

The Skeleton Revolution

Skeleton watches are among the most captivating and intriguing timepieces around today. For generations a wristwatch with an exhibition skeleton face and or caseback was limited to automatic and mechanical models and was featured only in higher-end styles.

Today many prominent watchmakers from Cartier, TAG Heuer, Zenith, Chopard, Frederique Constant and Maurice Lacroix to Invicta, Swiss Legend, Fossil, Marc Jacobs, Akribos XIV, August Steiner and Sturhling Original all feature skeleton watches in their assortments.

Skeleton timepieces were first introduced by legendary watchmaker Edouard Bouvet in 1822 in London England. The Bouvet brand, which now produces premium made timepieces priced up to $2.5 million, offered mechanical pocket watches with skeleton dials and casebacks, along with highly decorative movements.

INVICTA-12762Other pre-eminent watchmakers of the era: Vacheron Constantin, Patek Philippe, Breguet and Eterna featured skeleton models in their  mechanical timepiece collections. However, it was not before the 1960’s when Bulova introduced their Spaceview   automatic wristwatch, that skeleton watches were first mass produced.

For decades skeleton watches were limited to automatic and mechanical styles, however during the mid-2000’s, popular watchmakers such as Invicta and Stuhrling introduced skeleton quartz models. You’ll find many of today’s most sought-after skeleton watches this week at luxury retailer The Watchery during their Skeleton Timepieces event.

Many popular men’s and women’s watches are featured in the event including the Invicta Bolt men’s chronograph in 18K yellow gold plate. This dynamic men’s timepiece has a strapping 53mm diameter, 22mm thick case and signature link bracelet in 18K yellow gold-plate.

The unidirectional rotating bezel with signature braided rope trim detail encircles the skeleton dial with three subdials, luminous hands and hour markers. An exhibition skeleton case back adds to the striking design.

Features include an automatic day and date calendar, 1/10th of a second, small-second and 10-hour registers. A locking screw-down crown and case back provide water-resistance to 200 meters or 660 feet.

Premium Swiss-made automatic movement inside provides precise time-keeping accuracy.

Chrono-Logical Matters

In today’s ever changing times, it’s very easy to mistake an oversized women’s watch for a man’s watch. Watch styles like the times we live in are constantly changing and a good number of 40mm or larger women’s sport watches could easily pass for men’s styles.

However, it’s not as easy to mistake a chronograph for a chronometer, although they do sound alike. A chronograph is a watch with independent stop-watch and display watch functions. The term comes from the Greek terms for time: “chronos” and writing: “graph.” And the term is interpreted more today about the recording of time rather than writing.

In 1882, Edouard Heuer patented one of the first time-keeping chronograph watches. Five years later Heuer introduced an oscillating pinion mechanism which is still used in the craftsmanship of mechanical chronographs by many watchmakers today.

BREITLING-A7338710-BB49-SSA chronometer on the other hand is a Swiss-made timepiece awarded a certification of precision by the COSC (Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute). A certified chronometer has met the precision criteria and standards of the COSC, as well as having past rigid tests conducted by the Institute.

Interestingly, both 3-hand and chronograph timepieces have been awarded chronometer certification by the COSC. And Swiss-made automatic, mechanical and quartz timepieces are eligible for chronometer certification.

Many of today’s most-prestigious watchmakers, including TAG Heuer, Invicta, Chopard, Graham, Baume & Mercier, Zenith and Breitling feature COSC certified chronometers in their timepiece assortments. In fact, all Breitling watches, both automatic and quartz models are certified chronometers.

You’ll find many of today’s most-sought after Breitling watches at luxury retailer The Watchery, including the Colt II Chronograph for men. This outstanding certified chronometer has a generously proportioned case and matching triple link bracelet in premium grade stainless steel case.

The unidirectional rotating bezel with engraved markers surrounds the patterned black dial with three silver-tone subdials, luminous hands and baton hour markers. A window between the four and five o’clock hours reveals the automatic date calendar.

Features include 1/10th of a second, small-second and 12-hour subdials. A screw-down crown and case back provide water-resistance to 300 meters or 990 feet. Premium Swiss-made quartz movement provides precise time-keeping accuracy. Chronograph is 44mm in diameter and 14 mm thick.

The Baume & Mercier Mystique

Baume & Mercier is a Swiss watchmaker with a steep legacy in horology. The brand was founded in 1830 by brothers Louis-Victor and Celestin Baume, who opened a watch dealership in Jura, Switzerland, offering premium pocket watches of the highest quality and craftsmanship.

By the late 19th Century, the brand was recognized for their chronographs and grand complications, including tourbillons, minute repeaters and calendars and was recognized with the highest honors at international exhibitions in Paris, Melbourne, Zurich, London, Amsterdam and Chicago.

The Baume brand was also heralded for its time-keeping accuracy, victoring in a time-keeping competition held by the Kew Observatory in London during 1892.BAUME-A10048

In 1918 the Baume brand joined forces with Paul Mercier forming Baume & Mercier. A year later, the newly founded brand was awarded the “Poincon de Geneve,” the ultimate standard of watchmaking excellence by the Swiss Company of Watchmakers.

During the 1940’s, Baume & Mercier introduced timepieces expressly for women with jewelry inspired models featuring diamonds, gemstones and bangles. The designs were not just miniaturized designs of men’s models. Femininity soon became an integral part of the brand’s values and is evident today with the brands Linea series, created exclusively for women.

The Art Deco era of the 1940’s also inspired the introduction of the Hampton collection featuring rectangular shaped men’s and ladies’ timepieces with sleek, sophisticated contours. A modern updated version of the Hampton timepiece is among Baume & Mercier’s top-selling watches series today.

You’ll find many Baume & Mercier men’s and women’s watches at luxury retailer The Watchery, including the Hampton men’s automatic timepiece. This highly stylized wristwatch features a rectangular shaped case and signature link bracelet in premium grade stainless steel.

The stationary stainless steel bezel frames the handsome black dial with luminous hands and Arabic numeral hour markers. A window at the 3 o’clock hour reveals the automatic date calendar. A square small-seconds subdial above the 6′clock hour adds distinction.

Features include premium Swiss-made automatic movement inside and water-resistance to 50 meters. Watch is 32mm wide and 10 mm thick.

Titanium Traits

When it comes to best case material  for a diving watch, active sports timepiece or oversized “muscle” watch, titanium is the metal of choice. This relatively new metal has been used in the craftsmanship of watch cases and bracelets for less than 25 years and is more desired by many than stainless steel and even 14K or 18K gold.

First and foremost titanium is incredibly lightweight and extremely durable. A wristwatch made of titanium is lighter on the wrist and considerably more comfortable to wear over extended periods of time. For example, a 45mm diameter watch in titanium is lighter in weight than a timepiece in stainless steel or gold…and with many of today’s watches measuring over 45mm in diameter and more than 15mm thick it’s advantageous to wear an oversized titanium watch.

INVICTA-13680 (1)Titanium is also a stronger metal than steel or gold. What’s more titanium is highly resistant to corrosion in sea water and chlorine and is an excellent choice for diving, deep-sea expeditions and any poolside activity.

Sports enthusiasts and runners also prefer titanium watches not only for their lightweight characteristics, but also for the metal’s hypoallergenic qualities and ability to not corrode against sweat.

Swiss watchmakers TAG Heuer and Breitling were the first to include titanium in their watch collections in the late 1990′s. Today many prestigious watchmakers offer titanium models in their assortments, including Invicta, TW Steel, Citizen, Seiko, Swiss Legend, Omega, MOMO Design, Corum, Oris and Fossil.

You’ll find many of today’s best-selling titanium watches at luxury retailer The Watchery, including the Invicta Corduba  Chronograph for men. This outstanding automatic timepiece is water-resistant to 1000 meters and is the quintessential diver’s watch.

The robust 48mm diameter, 20mm thick brushed titanium case is presented on a handsome black kevlar strap, which is ideal for deep-sea explorations. The unidirectional rotating bezel encircles the black dial with an automatic day and date calendar, three subdials, luminous hands and hour markers.

A locking screw-down crown and case back, along with protective lever clasps on the push-pieces assure you of the ultimate water-resistance. Premium Swiss-made automatic inside provides the utmost time-keeping accuracy.

In The Winner’s Circle With TAG Heuer

With watch series named Aquaracer, Formula 1, Carrera, Monza and Monaco it is easy to see why TAG Heuer is the go-to watch brand in the world of auto racing. For generations, the brand has been closely identified with the high speed dynamics of the virile fast-paced sport.

Many may attribute the brand’s racing legacy to the time when actor Steve McQueen, who wore a Monaco chronograph on his wrist in the motion picture “Le Mans,” which catapulted the original Heuer brand to worldwide prominence and notoriety in 1970.

However Edouard Heuer, the brand’s founder, received a patent in 1911 for his Time of Trip dashboard chronograph, which was used in automobiles and aircrafts to measure the time and duration of a trip.

By 1958 with the Monte Carlo 12-Hour Stopwatch, the Super Autavia full chronograph, the Sebring 60-minute, split-second timer and the Auto Rallye 60-minute stop watch, the Heuer brand was the leading producer of stopwatches and timing equipment.CAH1210.BA0862

Heuer was also the top watch choice for automobile racers and enthusiasts. The brand  issued special versions of its chronographs for the Formula 1 and Indianapolis 500 competitions during the 1960′s.

In 1971, automaker Ferrari chose Heuer as the official timekeeper of Team Ferrari and Heuer watches were worn by illustrios drivers on the Ferrari team.

In 1985, the Heuer brand was acquired by Techniques d’Avant Garde, manufacturers of the ceramic turbochargers for Formula 1 cars.

The newly formulated company TAG Heuer soon introduced the Formula 1 racing inspired watch collection featuring cases made of the ceramic material used in the turbochargers.

A new, updated version of the Formula 1  is featured in TAG Heuer’s collection today, as are other racing inspired timepieces from the Carrera, Monaco and Monza collections. You’ll find many high-speed TAG Heuer watches at luxury retailer The Watchery, including the Formula 1 Men’s chronograph in stainless steel and ceramic.

Charriol watches offer a distinctive blend of French ingenuity and premium Swiss-made craftsmanship. Charriol wanted his wristwatches to do more than just tell time. He wanted each timepiece to be a fine piece of jewelry as well.
