It’s Black Friday: Let The Games Begin

The Thanksgiving Holiday  will be filled with many different games this year… from the many NFL and college football games on throughout the weekend to the widely popular “Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1” movie playing to capacity crowds at movie theaters coast-to-coast.

All eyes will be on the Seattle Seahawks – San Francisco 49ers NFL game Thursday night in San Francisco. Both teams are well on their way to the Super Bowl this year with 7-4 records and wining this game could solidify either team’s chance.

In college football, the number 1 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide goes up against Number 15 ranked Auburn Tigers on Saturday, while state rivals: the Florida State Seminoles and the Florida Gators will also face off on Saturday.ACCUTRON-63R34

The “The Hunger Games” movie is expected to be the most popular film playing at theaters this weekend. While the film focuses on the game of survival, a different game of survival will be going on in shopping malls across the nation, as  retailers open their doors Thursday evening for Black Friday sales.

More than 140 million consumers are expected to spend some portion of  the Thanksgiving weekend shopping. Having to endure traffic jams to get to the mall, not to mention trying to maneuver a parking spot when you arrive and having to fend for yourself against the crowds for the best deals is a game of survival to say the very least.

A less philistine approach this Black Friday is to shop the online Black Friday Savings Event at luxury retailer TheWatcherycom. Extraordinary Maurice Lacroix Time

Private label watch brands hold a time-honored distinction in the watchmaking industry. For generations a number of Swiss watchmakers provided movements, cases and entire timepieces for other Swiss watch brands.

Legendary watchmakers Zenith, Baume & Mercier and Roger DuBuis produced movements and entire timepieces for other prestigious brands in the 1900’s, including Tiffany, Cartier and Rolex.  More recently, popular watchmakers TW Steel and Maurice Lacroix started as private label watchmakers, producing timepieces under various brands before offering their house brands to the public.

Interestingly, many of today’s most sought-after fashion watch brands: Michael Kors, Burberry, Tory Burch, Emporio Armani, Marc by Marc Jacobs, DKNY and Diesel are produced by popular American watchmaker Fossil under licensing agreements.

MLACROIX-MP7208-SS001-000Maurice Lacroix’s origins began in 1975 as a manufacturer of private-label timepieces for its parent company Desco.  Every element of the brand’s timepieces was produced in-house at their manufacturing facilities in Switzerland.

By 1980, the private label’s prominence and popularity were so much in demand that Desco halted the production of third party timepieces at its Swiss manufacturing plant and introduced the Maurice Lacroix brand, featuring the premium quality and expert craftsmanship of its private label models.

In the early 1990’s, Maurice Lacroix introduced the Masterpiece watch collection and the brand immediately rose to international acclaim for its bespoke automatic and mechanical timepieces for men and women.

Maurice Lacroix wristwatches are showcased this week at luxury retailer TheWatchery.com during the site’s week-long Maurice Lacroix Extraordinary Timepieces For Men & Women event. Heralded timepieces from the brand’s Masterpiece, Les Classiques and Pontos collections are featured in the event.

Alpina watches   holds a rich and esteemed legacy in watchmaking history.  Founded in 1883 by watchmaker Gottlieb Hauser to unite various independent Swiss watchmakers, the brand was originally named the Alpina Union Horlogère S.A.

The Alpina Union was originally developed to manufacture movements and timepieces by forming an alliance of cooperating manufacturers and suppliers. The  union soon started to develop and produce in-house calibers and chronometers.

The Skeleton Revolution

Skeleton watches are among the most captivating and intriguing timepieces around today. For generations a wristwatch with an exhibition skeleton face and or caseback was limited to automatic and mechanical models and was featured only in higher-end styles.

Today many prominent watchmakers from Cartier, TAG Heuer, Zenith, Chopard, Frederique Constant and Maurice Lacroix to Invicta, Swiss Legend, Fossil, Marc Jacobs, Akribos XIV, August Steiner and Sturhling Original all feature skeleton watches in their assortments.

Skeleton timepieces were first introduced by legendary watchmaker Edouard Bouvet in 1822 in London England. The Bouvet brand, which now produces premium made timepieces priced up to $2.5 million, offered mechanical pocket watches with skeleton dials and casebacks, along with highly decorative movements.

INVICTA-12762Other pre-eminent watchmakers of the era: Vacheron Constantin, Patek Philippe, Breguet and Eterna featured skeleton models in their  mechanical timepiece collections. However, it was not before the 1960’s when Bulova introduced their Spaceview   automatic wristwatch, that skeleton watches were first mass produced.

For decades skeleton watches were limited to automatic and mechanical styles, however during the mid-2000’s, popular watchmakers such as Invicta and Stuhrling introduced skeleton quartz models. You’ll find many of today’s most sought-after skeleton watches this week at luxury retailer The Watchery during their Skeleton Timepieces event.

Chrono-Logical Matters

In today’s ever changing times, it’s very easy to mistake an oversized women’s watch for a man’s watch. Watch styles like the times we live in are constantly changing and a good number of 40mm or larger women’s sport watches could easily pass for men’s styles.

However, it’s not as easy to mistake a chronograph for a chronometer, although they do sound alike. A chronograph is a watch with independent stop-watch and display watch functions. The term comes from the Greek terms for time: “chronos” and writing: “graph.” And the term is interpreted more today about the recording of time rather than writing.

In 1882, Edouard Heuer patented one of the first time-keeping chronograph watches. Five years later Heuer introduced an oscillating pinion mechanism which is still used in the craftsmanship of mechanical chronographs by many watchmakers today.

BREITLING-A7338710-BB49-SSA chronometer on the other hand is a Swiss-made timepiece awarded a certification of precision by the COSC (Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute). A certified chronometer has met the precision criteria and standards of the COSC, as well as having past rigid tests conducted by the Institute.

Interestingly, both 3-hand and chronograph timepieces have been awarded chronometer certification by the COSC. And Swiss-made automatic, mechanical and quartz timepieces are eligible for chronometer certification.

Many of today’s most-prestigious watchmakers, including TAG Heuer, Invicta, Chopard, Graham, Baume & Mercier, Zenith and Breitling feature COSC certified chronometers in their timepiece assortments. In fact, all Breitling watches, both automatic and quartz models are certified chronometers.

You’ll find many of today’s most-sought after Breitling watches at luxury retailer The Watchery, including the Colt II Chronograph for men. This outstanding certified chronometer has a generously proportioned case and matching triple link bracelet in premium grade stainless steel case.

The unidirectional rotating bezel with engraved markers surrounds the patterned black dial with three silver-tone subdials, luminous hands and baton hour markers. A window between the four and five o’clock hours reveals the automatic date calendar.

Features include 1/10th of a second, small-second and 12-hour subdials. A screw-down crown and case back provide water-resistance to 300 meters or 990 feet. Premium Swiss-made quartz movement provides precise time-keeping accuracy. Chronograph is 44mm in diameter and 14 mm thick.
