Daylight savings time took place this past weekend and if you’re like millions of other Americans, you had to manually update your timepieces, moving each one hour ahead. An automatic or self-winding wristwatch features a built-in mainspring mechanism inside that winds automatically from the natural motion of a user’s arm and provides sufficient energy to run the watch and avoid manual winding.

In 1770  Abraham Louis Perrelet invented the first automatic timepiece with a pocket watch model designed to operate when the watch wearer started walking, utilizing an oscillating weight that moved up and down.

Prior to Perrelet’s self-winding mechanism design, mechanical watches required manual winding almost daily to keep running smoothly.

The Maurice Lacroix Pontos automatic chronograph is an excellent choice. This Swiss-made timepiece is meticulously crafted inside and out from the premium grade stainless steel case in a black ion-plate finish to the intricate mechanical movement inside.

The case is presented on a high-performance black rubber strap. An exhibition skeleton caseback lets you see the precision movement inside. A stationary bezel encircles the black dial with a tachymeter outer dial, three subdials and luminous hands.

Features include an automatic date calendar, small-second, 30-minute and 12-hour registers. An anti-reflective sapphire crystal above the dial provides clear, accurate viewing. Chronograph is 43mm in diameter, 16mm thick and is water-resistant to 50 meters or 166 feet.
