Time-Honored Classics…

In today’s ever changing world of fashion and trends, some classic items rarely if ever go out of style. The Burberry trench coat and cashmere scrarf easily come to mind. Since the late 1870’s Burberry has been producing men and women’s trench coats featuring beige cotton gabardine fabric exteriors lined with the brand’s signature check pattern.

The Burberry trench coat remains a popular fashion mainstay throughout the globe today and has been worn by renowned world leaders, entertainers and athletes. The brand’s iconic check-pattern cashmere scarves have also been a fashion mainstay for many decades and are more popular today than they were in the 1900’s.

Notably very little has changed in both the styles of the Burberry trench coats or scarves, outside perhaps double and single breasted buttons and protective finishes on the coats along with slightly updated patterns on the scarves and coat linings.

In the world of horology, some wristwatches hold the distinction of being time-honored classics. Prestigious watchmakers Rolex, Bulova, Movado, Maurice Lacroix, Oris, Gucci, Lucien Piccard and Raymond Weil have been producing fine timepieces for decades and a number of their styles have remained time-keeping classics as well. These brands are highlighted this week in the Time Honored Classics event at luxury retailer TheWatchery.com.

Titanium Takes On Time

Titanium is by far one of the most desired metals used today in the craftsmanship of fine wristwatches. Although premium grade titanium may have a flimsy feel, it is one of the most lightweight yet durable metals around.

In addition, titanium is a more desired metal for diving watches since it is considerably less corrosive to saltwater than stainless steel and its lightweight characteristics are more comfortable on the wrist for diving as well. It’s no wonder prestigious Swiss watchmakers Omega, Corum and Raymond Weil have reimagined some of their top watch styles in titanium.

To The Moon And Back…

The moon has certainly stirred the imagination of many popular watchmakers. In the early 1960’s,  Bulova, Longines, Wittnauer and Omega were in competition to produce the very first watch to be worn on the moon during the Apollo 11 mission to the moon in 1969.

Although American watchmakers Bulova and Wittnauer had the domestic edge, Swiss watchmaker Omega won out with the Speedmaster mechanical timepiece which featured a Plexiglas crystal and dust-proof elements, two essential characteristics necessary for the moon landing.

Lucien Piccard Sierra

More notably, lunar timepieces have held a far longer heritage in the world of horology. For generations preeminent watchmakers Patek Philippe, Oris, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Franck Muller, Lucien Piccard, Omega, Chopard, IWC, Vacheron and Zenith have been producing Moon Phase timepieces.

Moon phase timepieces follow the progression of the moon in its different phases, from the new moon and first quarter to the full moon and last quarter. The different phases of the moon are presented on a window of the watch dial. A rotating disc on the dial displays the portion of the moon as it could be seen from the earth. The cycle is designed to feature the actual 29.54 life cycles of new moon to new moon.

Popular Moon Phase watches are highlighted this week at luxury retailer TheWatchery.com with the March Moon Phase Time Event. Over forty Moon Phase timepieces are featured in the promotion, including highly sought-after styles from Maurice Lacroix, Oris, Egard, Frederique Constant, MOMO Design, Croton, Lucien Piccard, Akribos XXIV, Ingersoll and Invicta.

Although big and bold is the trend for most of today’s top-selling men’s and women’s timepieces from numerous watchmakers around the globe, most notably Invicta, TAG Heuer, Fossil, Michael Kors, Bulova, IWC and Omega, many Scandinavian watchmakers are going against the grade with slim and slender minimalist designs.
