High-End Chronological Time

The term chronograph comes from the Greek phrases for time; “chronos” and writing: “graph” and it is interpreted more today to be about the recording of time rather than the writing of time. In fact the annotation of term chronological is “arranged in the order of time.”

Although numerous watches may boast having a chronograph function, a true chronograph is a timepiece with both independent stop watch and display functions on the dial. Both Breitling and TAG Heuer were instrumental in the development of chronographs.

Breitling Windrider Chronomat

In 1882 Edouard Heuer introduced the first independent chronograph stop-watch function on a pocket watch. He followed five years later with the development of an oscillating pinion mechanism, a movement which is currently still used in the craftsmanship of mechanical chronographs by many watchmakers.

Heuer later introduced the first wristwatch chronograph in 1914 and the Micrograph two year later, which holds the distinction of being the very first stopwatch accurate to 1/100th of a second.

Breitling is responsible for the development of the push-pieces, which operate the stop-watch functions on a chronograph. In 1915, the brand launched the first independent chronograph push-piece. It perfected the system of stop/start functions on its chronographs in 1923, developing a resetting mechanism useful for the timing of sporting events and calculation of flight times. In 1934, Breitling accomplished a breakthrough in horological history with the development of the second independent reset push-piece for its chronographs.

Think Inside The Box…

Square and rectangular shaped wristwatches evoke a both a vintage and heirloom vibe. The classic linear silhouettes on these timepieces recall the splendor and romance of models worn on the wrists during  on the early and mid 20th century.

Cartier Tank Americaine

In fact, one of the very first wristwatches,  the Cartier Santos introduced in 1904, featured a 31mm wide square-shaped gold case on a leather strap. In 1917, Cartier followed the Santos with the Tank, an elongated, rectangular shaped timepiece modeled after Renault tanks used during World War I. Other watchmakers such as Movado and Bulova offered their own version of rectangular shaped models during the same era with the the Polyplan and Trojan timepieces respectively.

The Tank watch was so popular for Cartier at the time, that the brand registered and copyrighted the name in the early 1920’s.  In the 1940’s Swiss watchmaker Baume & Mercier offered a wider rectangular shaped gold men’s watch presented on a snakeskin strap, which would later serve as the inspiration for one of the brand’s most popular collections for men and women: The Hampton.

In the early 1970’s, TAG Heuer introduced a racing inspired chronograph The Monaco, which was worn by actor Steve McQueen in the film “Le Mans,” and brought the brand to widespread popularity throughout the globe and is still being produced 46-years later today.

The Professional Choice: Bell & Ross Watches

Bell & Ross is a relatively a young watch company that is heralded and revered in horological circles today for their exemplary designed and precision crafted timepieces. Founded in 1992 by designer Bruno Belamich and business entrepreneur Carlos Rosilo, Bell & Ross set out to create timepieces for professionals in extreme situations, namely pilots, astronauts, divers and bomb-disposal experts.

The company looked to design watches for discerning professionals that met four fundamental principles: readability, performance, precision and water-resistance. Each Bell & Ross timepiece features highly accurate Swiss-made movements, clear visual indicators, the optimal water-resistance and distinctive functions for specialized use.

The brand’s first BR timepiece was patterned after the shape of a cockpit instrument and instantly became a popular choice for pilots and astronauts. The BR02 diving watches offered highly legible dials and water resistance to 1000 meters, while the Hydromax models contained hydraulic fluid and were able to counteract external pressures.BELLROSS-BR01-94-TITANIUM
