Alpina & Eterna Time Legends…

Alpina and Eterna Watches are legendary time-keeping icons in the world of Swiss-made horology. The two brands were both founded in Switzerland in the 1800’s…the latter in 1856 and the former in 1883. Eterna & Porsche Design Watch Finds

At first glance Eterna and Porsche Design watches have very little in common outside of being both Swiss made. Founded in Grenchen, Switzerland in 1856, Eterna is heralded for introducing a ball-bearing mounted rotor system in its automatic timepieces in 1948. The system reduced friction and resistance in the weight of the watch that wound the mainspring inside. It also increased the accuracy of the watch as well and catapulted the brand’s presence in the horological industry as many other watchmakers started to use the Eterna inner mechanism movements in their timepieces.

Eterna Adventic Automatic

Eterna soon adopted the five ball bearing design as its corporate logo and the design soon appeared on the dials of the brand’s timepieces. Eterna reached another milestone in the 1960’s with the introduction of the Eterna Matic 3000 Dato automatic men’s watch and the women’s Sahida automatic watch. Both models with 4mm thick case were the thinnest watches featuring automatic movements.

After being sold several times during the 1980’s and 1990’s, Eterna was sold to Porsche Design in 1999 and now produces watches under their signature brand and Porsche Design label as well. The acquisition reaffirmed the brand’s presence in the horological industry with the 2007 introduction of the Eterna Matic, highlighting a new and updated ball bearing mechanism inside along with 2009 debut of the Madison Eight Days men’s watch, which featured the Spherodrive 8-day power reserve mechanism.
