U-Boat Time Favorites…

The Tuscany region of central Italy is renowned for many things, including its lush landscapes, fine cuisine and wine. The region is  the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance and it is where artists Leonardo da Vinci, Lorenzo de Medici and Niccolo Machiavelli were born. Michelangelo’s infamous statue of David and the Leaning Tower of Pisa are both in the Tuscany region.

The region is also the birthplace and headquarters of U-Boat watches, which was founded in the year 2000 by Italo Fontana, who came across watch designs by his grandfather Ilvo Fontana, who was commissioned by the Italian Navy in 1942 to create high-performance, precision crafted time instruments of high quality standards to be worn by Italian military seamen.

Ilvo Fontana’s designs did not come into fruition at the time and the younger Fontana spent seven years developing U-Boat Watches, incorporating the precise technical specifications of his grandfather’s original designs with premium grade stainless steel, bronze and gold along with advanced, state-of-the-art materials, including carbon fiber, ceramic, tungsten and titanium.

Today, each and every U-Boat watch is produced at the same Tuscany facility where the brand was founded sixteen years ago and each boasts the distinction of being Made In Italy as well. You’ll find an impressive collection of U-Boat watches at The Watchery, including highly sought-after styles from the Classico and Flightdeck collections.

Automatic Time Classics…

The art of fine watchmaking can certainly be defined by the expert craftsmanship and high-quality materials featured in a timepiece, as well as the meticulous automatic or mechanical movement inside. Just like a well-crafted high-end automobile, all of the elements of a luxury wristwatch work harmoniously together to create a true masterpiece of precision and design.

Serious watch collectors and aficionados would concur that the ultra-precise automatic or mechanical movement inside is perhaps one of the most important features to consider when purchasing a watch. Mechanical watches have a spring-driven mechanism and are powered by a series of gears oscillating back and forth at a constant rate. Automatic watches on the other hand feature an oscillating weight that moves up and down and operate at the motion of the wrist when in use.

Mechanical watches require manual winding on an almost daily basis to keep the movement running properly, while automatic models remain running when in use and require a watch winder when not in use.

Luxury high-end automatic watches are featured this week at TheWatchery.com with our Automatic Time Event. Over 335 automatic watches are highlighted in the promotion, including styles from Rolex, IWC, Cartier, Breitling, Porsche Design, Ebel, DeGrisogono, Greco, Perrelet, Greco, Corum, Bell & Ross and Bvlgari.

Victorinox Swiss Army Time…

Victorinox Swiss Army is one of the most highly regarded and sought-after luxury brands in the world today, popular for its travel goods, apparel, wristwatches and cutlery. The brand was founded in 1884 by Karl Eisener, who opened a cutler’s workshop in Ibach-Schwyz, Switzerland offering premium pocket knives and other cutlery.

In 1891, the Swiss military commissioned Eisener to produce pocket knives for soldiers in their armed forces. As a result, the “Swiss Officer’s Knife” and “Sport Knife” were registered to Eisener’s Association of Swiss Master Cutlers in 1897.

Victorinox pocket knives and cutlery flourished throughout Europe in the years that followed and the company became a global force after World War II.

In 1989, Victorinox Swiss Army expanded its product line with wristwatches featuring the same high-quality, surgical grade stainless steel used in their popular knives, along with premium Swiss-made ETA movements inside and 12/24 hour military time on the dials.

CARTIER-W2603156-SD
Cartier Tank Americaine

In fact, one of the very first wristwatches,  the Cartier Santos introduced in 1904, featured a 31mm wide square-shaped gold case on a leather strap. In 1917, Cartier followed the Santos with the Tank, an elongated, rectangular shaped timepiece modeled after Renault tanks used during World War I. Other watchmakers such as Movado and Bulova offered their own version of rectangular shaped models during the same era with the the Polyplan and Trojan timepieces respectively.

The Tank watch was so popular for Cartier at the time, that the brand registered and copyrighted the name in the early 1920’s.  In the 1940’s Swiss watchmaker Baume & Mercier offered a wider rectangular shaped gold men’s watch presented on a snakeskin strap, which would later serve as the inspiration for one of the brand’s most popular collections for men and women: The Hampton.

In the early 1970’s, TAG Heuer introduced a racing inspired chronograph The Monaco, which was worn by actor Steve McQueen in the film “Le Mans,” and brought the brand to widespread popularity throughout the globe and is still being produced 46-years later today.

Oris Swiss-Made Excellence

In today’s digital age, the old-world precision and craftsmanship of an Oris Swiss-made timepiece stands above the rest. Founded in 1904 by watchmakers Paul Cattin and Georges Christian in Hölstein, Switzerland, Oris Watches are renowned for their meticulous mechanical and automatic watch movements, which are still produced in-house at their Hölstein production facilities.

In fact every aspect of an Oris timepiece from the intricate movements inside… to the case, crystal and band on the outside is assembled at their Hölstein facilities, which has grown to make Oris one of the largest watch producers in Switzerland.

In 1966, Oris introduced it’s highly regarded Caliber 645 automatic movement, featuring a 25-jewel lever escapement that is still being used in many timepieces today. The brand’s Caliber 581 complication automatic movement was one of the first watch movements to offer moon phase display, date, day of the week and an independent second time zone as well. Introduced in 1991, the Caliber 581 is also being used today as well.ORIS-0167775777054-701000-SD

Although Oris is privately owned and operated today, it was briefly owned by ASUAG holdings during the 1970’s until 1982, a time when inexpensive quartz watches were introduced to disappointing results.

The 1982 buyout was led by Ulrich Herzog, who transitioned Oris into the global watch leader it is today.  The brand’s Jazz series timepieces introduced in 2000, featuring tributes to music legends Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker, Frank Sinatra, Thelonious Monk and Bob Dylan furthered the brand’s global recognition and prominence.

In addition to cultural timepieces, Oris also focuses on racing chronographs, aviation timepieces and diver’s watches. Oris has been the sole watch supplier to the BMW Formula One racing team since 2003. The brand’s Big Crown pilot watches are highly regarded and revered by pilots, while the Oris Prodiver model delivers water-resistance to 1,000 meters.

You’ll find many premium Oris timepieces for men and women at luxury retailer TheWatchery.com, including the Limited Edition Williams F1 Team GMT Chronograph. This muscular and virile men’s racing watch features a lightweight, comfortable titanium case presented on a rugged rubber strap with engraved tire-tread detail and costly deployment clasp.

The skeleton exhibition caseback lets you see the intricate Swiss automatic movement inside. The left-facing crown and push-pieces add distinction. A tachymeter bezel surrounds the carbon fiber dial with three sub-dials, a GMT hand, luminous hands and hour markers.

Features include a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal above the dial, an automatic date calendar, small-second, 30-minute and 12-hour subdials. Chronograph is 45mm in diameter, 14mm thick and is water-resistant to 50 meters.
