When you think about New York City, Broadway shows, 5 star restaurants, the Naked Cowboy, and counterfeit handbags and watches probably come to mind. But soon that last one might get you in big trouble. One NYC lawmaker is proposing a bill that would make it illegal to purchase counterfeit designer goods —Cartier watches included! If found guilty, it can cost you up to $1,000 in fines or a year in jail. City councilwoman Margaret Chin states, “I urge visitors that come to New York to come for the authenticity, not to buy these fake bags or electronics.”
Currently, it’s only illegal to sell fake goods on the street, although it’s not really enforced. If the law is passed, there will be signs warning people –which is more for the tourists because most people know exactly what they’re getting themselves into when they buy a Cartier watch for $20. Even if the price is tempting, do you really want to sacrifice quality? These watches will probably break in a matter of months. The law could really deter people from committing this fashion crime and encourage people to buy the real deal.
So forget the street corner knockoff and purchase a real designer watch from The Watchery.
