Gucci: The First Name In Italian Fashion

The name Gucci is synonymous with premier Italian fashion. The brand is easily one of the most recognizable fashion brands in the world today.

Like other Italian fashion icons: Fendi and Salvatore Ferragamo, Gucci started out as a leather goods shop. Its founder Guccio Gucci opened a store in Florence Italy, creating handbags, small luggage and shoes in 1920. Gucci soon expanded operations to other cities in Italy. By 1950, Gucci had a shop in New York city and soon became an International status symbol not only for their leather goods, but apparel and accessories too.

The brand’s growth continued through the 1970s with the introduction of wristwatches and fragrances. Things changed for Gucci during the late 1980s with tax scandals and a murder in the family, which not only tarnished the brands’ image but put the company on the edge of bankruptcy.YA101507(L)

In 1990 designer Tom Ford was hired as a ready-to-wear designer. Four years later Ford was promoted to creative director for the fashion house. Ford’s vision and creativity single-handedly turned Gucci around, making it the premier Italian fashion house in the late 1990s.  Although Ford left Gucci in 2004, the brand remains relevant and popular today.

Gucci timepieces are among the most-sought after wristwatches in the world. The brand’s emblematic style is carried out in many of their wrist fashions…from the signature G-logo on the bezels to the patterned Gucci crest on the dials and bracelets.
