In The Winner’s Circle: The Corum Admiral’s Cup

For generations the Admiral’s Cup International Yachting Regatta competition was the unofficial world championship of offshore racing. The competition started in 1957 between England and the United States with each nation having three teams. It took place during the  summer at Crowes on the Isle of Wright, located in southern England and consisted of six yachting events, including two races at sea, a coastal route and three Olympic triangle competitions. The event was held biennially, taking place on odd numbered years.

Other nations including Germany, Australia, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Ireland Japan and Sweden joined in the competition in the years that followed with each nation having the obligatory three teams present.CORUM-895-931-06-V791AN92

The Admiral’s Cup is considered to be one the most difficult and extreme sailing competitions, since the sea was considerably fierce in the region where the competition was held, especially in the summer months as frequent bad weather constantly prevailed. In fact, a violent storm was attributed to the deaths of six sailors competing in the Admiral’s Cup event in 1979.

In the early 1960’s, Swiss watchmaker Corum became the official timekeeper of the Admiral’s Cup competition. Although the competition has not been staged since 2005, the daring and invigorating characteristics of the event still live on in the Corum Admiral’s Cup timepieces, which are still in production today.
