Rolex Watches: Destined For Greatness

For generations Rolex Watches have been amongst the most highly sought-after timepieces in the world. These premium Swiss-made wristwatches are known to hold their value far better than watches from brands of similar caliber and excellence.

Rolex  dates back to 1905 in London, England where Hans Wilsdorf and his brother-in-law Alfred Davis started importing premium movements from Switzerland and housed them in high-quality cases that they sold to jewelers, who imprinted their own names and brands on the dials. Three years later Wilsdorf and Davis opened a production facility in Le Chaux-de Fonds, Switzerland and registered the Rolex trademark name.

Legend has it the Rolex name is derived from the French phrase for exquisite clockwork: horlogerie exquise. The brand immediately gained prominence and was the very first watchmaker to earn chronometer certification in 1910 by the highly esteemed COSC (Official Swiss Chronometer Test Institute).ROLEX-16253-PO

Rolex has achieved many other horological milestones in its 111-year history, including producing the very first water-resistant wristwatch the Oyster in 1926, followed by the very first watch water-resistant to 100 meters, the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Submariner in 1953.

In addition, the Rolex Datejust introduced in 1945 was the first watch with an automatic changing date calendar on the dial and the Rolex GMT Master is the first timepiece to display two time zones at once on the dial.

After the death of his wife in 1944, Wilsdorf set up the Hans Wilsforf Foundation, a family trust to insure that a portion of the company’s income would go to charity. All of Wilsdorf’s company shares were left to the trust upon his death in 1960.

Rolex remains the pre-eminent watchmaker in the world today and the brand still holds the distinction of being owned by a private family trust,
