Created in the 19th century by a guild plagued by counterfeit products, the Geneva Seal is currently considered to be the symbol of watch-making perfection. Enacted into law in 1886, the Geneva Seal is probably one of the oldest professional labels, recognised both as an indication of independent origin and a guarantee of superior quality. Three prerequisites determine the award of the Geneva Seal:
- The movement must be mechanical and, at a minimum, assembled and adjusted in the canton of Geneva.
- Each calibre must meet twelve technical and aesthetic criteria outlined in the regulations, which have a bearing on its design and characteristics as well as the quality of the manufacture and finishes.
- The caliber must be approved and officially recognized by the Office for the Voluntary Inspection of Watches from Geneva (Bureau de Contrôle Facultatif des Montres de l’Etat de Genève). This Office is supervised by a sworn-in commission composed of members that have been appointed by the government of the canton.
Among the Geneva watchmakers who regularly submit their movements for the Geneva Seal certification are Cartier and Chopard. Examples of both brand name watches are on sale right now. Take, for instance, this Cartier men’s Ballon Bleu De Cartier wathch, an automatic movement chronograph with silver dial and genuine black alligator leather strap. It’s 30% off with guaranteed free shipping. Explore all our other fantastic deals on luxury watches at TheWatchery.com!

In 1904, the Brazilian pioneer aviator, Alberto Santos-Dumont complained to his friend Louis Cartier of the unreliability and impracticality of using pocket watches while flying. Cartier designed a flat wristwatch with a distinctive square bezel. This watch was appreciated not only Santos-Dumont but also many other customers. Thus the “Santos” was born. This was Cartier’s first men’s wristwatch.
In 1907, Cartier signed a contract with Edmond Jaeger, who agreed to exclusively supply the movements for Cartier watches. By this time, Cartier had branches in London, New York and St. Petersburg and was quickly becoming one of the most successful watch companies in the world. The Baignoire and Tortue models, both of which are still in production today, were introduced in 1912, followed by the introduction of the Tank model in 1917. This, designed by Louis Cartier, was inspired from the newly introduced tanks on the Western Front. This line, too, has survived, with over thirty varieties of watches made since.

Cartier as a brand name is among the most preferred by upper echelon folks hoping to make impact with their accessories. Founded in Paris in 1847, Cartier watches have been a staple of the elite for as long as they have been made. In many ways their stock has only gotten greater as time has marched on for the brand which remains competitive and in some cases dominant in its field.
Right now at The Watchery there is a gorgeous Cartier Women’s Baignoire Mechanical watch, with white diamonds and a leather strap that I found particularly fashionable. It ‘s the sort of watch a loved one will wear for decades. Its timeless typeface for its Roman numeral digits really gives the watch a look that is built to last.
Ever notice how many of Cartier watches, especially dress watches, have roman numerals on their faces? It’s kind of a staple of a lot of their design. Beautiful, bold Roman numerals. There’s something about the usage of Roman numerals that makes us take them more seriously. Maybe it’s their regal look, the classicism, the fact that they are so rarely used today as they are not the standard. But maybe they should be.
Maybe with your Cartier watches, you can bring back the Roman numeral movement. You can start writing down the date in them, can recite your birthday in them, balance your check book with them, and use them in ever day language. People may think you are a little weird at first, but just think of the possibilities if you can get the ball rolling and get others to follow suit! We’d live in a much more dignified world. It’d be pretty neat. But maybe having them everywhere would eventually take away from how unique they are. Maybe they should be preserved for beautiful things.
So the next time you admire that Cartier watch on your wrist, think about the beauty of those Roman numerals. They are definitely something special.
One of my favorite Twilight Zone episodes as a kid was Time Enough at Last. It was that episode where Henry Bemis loves to read but never finds enough time to read everything he’d like. The H bomb drops and he survives, him and all his books. He finally has all the time to read, until he stumbles and his glasses fall and shatter, leaving him virtually blind.
That twist was pretty stunning and stuck with me ever since I was a little girl. wouldn’t you want time enough at last to experience everything you’d want? Read all the books you never had time for, explore places you haven’t yet traveled? Maybe you can’t stop time but Cartier watches will certainly make you feel like you have all the time in the world. With such elegant designs and eye catching faces, just checking the time will make you feel as if there’s no rush.
So if you need to feel like you’ve got time on your side, consider Cartier watches. You’ll love it and others will too. And you really will feel as though you have time enough at last.
