Maurice Lacroix may sound like a French watch brand, but it is actually among the top watch manufacturers in Switzerland – no mean feat considering that country’s high reputation for watchmaking.
The company can trace its roots back all the way to 1889 in the Desco von Schulthess (Desco) company, which had roots in the silk trade but begun an interest in luxury watches. In 1961 Desco acquired an assembly facility named Tiara, interestingly enough, and there it produced private label watches for third parties. In 1975, Desco started marketing watches under the brand name Maurice Lacroix. Like other Swiss watch brands, including Rolex and Omega, Maurice Lacroix does not correspond to any one individual. But it sounds very distinct and sophisticated.
By 1980, Maurice Lacroix had become so successful that the facility in Saignelégier ceased production for third parties. During the 1990s, the brand experienced a tremendous growth phase with the launch of their high end ‘Les Mécaniques’ line, later renamed the Masterpiece’ collection.

If you find yourself stressed about what to get your loved one for Valentine’s day, the first step is to blame Geoffrey Chaucer. The venerable English poet and courtier, when he was not making thinly veiled allegories for Lancastrian noblemen and/or poop jokes, wrote a great many romances, one among which was The Parliament Of Fowls. It contains the very first recorded reference to Valentine’s Day: “For this was on Saint Valentine’s Day, when every bird cometh there to choose his mate.”
It is very possible that Chaucer made this up completely, and very probably he was referring to early May, when birds are more likely to be mating. But still, the idea of St. Valentine’s feast day being related to the idea of signs or declarations of love has come down to us from the middle ages nonetheless.
While a copy of The CaterburyTales might go over well if you significant other is a medievalist, this Philip Stein Mother of Pearl Dial with pink lizard leather strap watch gotten at huge Valentine’s savings might do the trick. Along with the polished look you would expect of designer watches, the Philip Stein natural frequency technology has been infused with key frequencies in a proprietary process. When worn on the wrist, the watch exposes frequencies to the biofield and informs the body to relax and become more resistant to stress. Studies have shown wearers sleep better, are less stress, and focus better with Philip Stein watches. Amazing, right?
Effortlessly matching any suit, this classy Bvlgari timepiece, with black dial and 18k solid gold case and brown leather straps, and its cool, bold design, will elegantly go with anyone’s style. Bvlgari has long been a name not only associated with luxury watches, but with luxury in general: jewelry, perfume, all the pleasure a sophisticated urbanite could desire can probably be found in Bvlgari’s prestigious location on 5th Avenue. Its roots are far more humble, however, and yet oddly heroic.
Sotirios Voulgaris, from whom the company gets its name and its distinctive ‘V,’ began his career as a jeweller in his home village Paramythia, where his first store can still be seen. In 1881 he finally moved to Rome, where in 1884 he founded his company and opened his second shop in via Sistina. The store was then replaced by the current flagship store in via dei Condotti, opened in 1905 by Bulgari with the help of his two sons, Costantino and Giorgio. The store quickly became a place where the world’s rich and famous came for the unique, high quality jewelry and watches combining Greek and Roman art.
During the Second World War, Costantino Bulgari and his wife, Laura Bulgari, hid three Jewish women in their own Roman home. They were strangers to them; the Bulgaris opened their doors out of outrage for the raid of the Roman ghetto in October 1943. For their generous action, on 31 December 2003, they were awarded the title of Righteous among the Nations at Yad Vashem in Jerusalem.
Mens watches are one of the easiest ways for a guy to latch on to their very particular sense of style and make the most of their fashion options. In many ways the fashion possibilities for men are limited. These limits come in many forms. A men’s suit can only be so different where as dresses can take on a wealth of different shapes and forms. The amount of accessories that are okay for a man to wear are also quite limited. Making the most out of the options available should be a man’s primary style goal. Watches offer a lot of style potential and a whole lot of class.
