What Makes You Move?

Whether you’re considering making your first major watch acquisition or looking to enhance your timepiece collection, there are many aspects to take into consideration, especially the watch type, brand, characteristics, cost and movement.

Once you’ve settled on a specific brand or brands, the style and cost of your new timepiece, you’re left with deciding upon which watch movement will be right for you – automatic, mechanical or quartz. Each movement has both its advantages and disadvantages too.

Mechanical watches feature time-honored precision and craftsmanship and hold the distinction of being the oldest watch movement around, dating back to the early 17th Century. Mechanical watches have a spring driven mechanism inside and are powered by a series of gears oscillating back and forth at a constant rate. The one caveat with owning a mechanical watch is that it must be wound by hand on an almost daily basis.

Automatic watches feature a built-in mainspring mechanism that wind automatically from the natural motion of the user’s wrist and provides sufficient energy to keep the movement running without manual winding. Automatic watches however must be worn almost continuously to keep the movement inside running and require a watch winder when not in use.

Quartz watches have a vibrating quartz mineral inside that operates with a battery that converts the vibrations into power and time. They do not require self or manual winding. However, the batteries inside must be changed periodically over a period of anywhere from eighteen to thirty-six months.

The three movements are the focus of attention this week at TheWatchery.com and many prominent highly sought-after timepieces featuring Automatic, Mechanical and Quartz movements are featured in the promotion, including styles from Rolex, Cartier, Breitling, Ebel, Bedat & Co.
